to the Federal Trade Commission, complaints about
identity theft nearly doubled in 2002, putting it
at the top of list
of consumer frauds for the third consecutive year.
"43% of roughly 380,000 complaints
in 2002 involved the hijacking of someone's identity,
such as credit card number or Social Security number,
to steal money and commit fraud."
"It costs the average victim
more than $1,000 to cope with damage from an identity
theft."
